Leading positions in the field of research
The University of Cologne occupies a leading position in many specialized areas of research. However, Cologne also remains a centre of multi-faceted "classical" philosophical and historical research. The Institute of Archaeology, to cite just one example, is one of the most important research centres for interpreting unpublished papyri from Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquity. In 1995 the specialist research sector "cultural and scenic change in arid Africa" was established in which the disciplines of Egyptology, African Studies, Botany, Geography, Prehistory and Early History, and Ethnology participate.

Outstanding reputation in economics and business
Cologne's faculty of Economics, business and Social Science is one of the biggest in Germany as well. It has along tradition of policy consultancy, both nationally and internationally. The Department of Cooperative Studies - which implements this project on behalf of the University - is part of the faculty of Economics, business and Social Science and looks back on a long history of about 80 years.
