Steve Hollingworth
Steve Hollingworth joined CARE in 1985. He has served as Country Director in India since 2002, where he is leading the country office’s transition from food aid into programming that addresses the social exclusion faced by women and other vulnerable groups, and safeguards rights. Under his leadership, the country office has made significant advances in maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS prevention, microfinance, tribal empowerment, and emergency preparedness and response.
Previously, Hollingworth served as CARE’s Country Director in Sri Lanka, overseeing CARE’s work supporting self-help in the areas of livelihood development, microfinance, rehabilitation and resettlement, water and sanitation, emergency relief preparedness and response. Under his leadership, that country office became a recognized leader in community level conflict resolution and inter-ethnic reconciliation. As director of programmes in CARE in Bangladesh, Hollingworth developed CARE’s programming on areas including health, microfinance, sustainable agriculture, good governance, and gender equity. He has also held a leadership positions with CARE in the Lesotho and Bolivia.
Hollingworth holds an M.A. (Econ.) in Development Studies from Victoria University of Manchester, England, and a B.A. in Economics from Augustana College in
Rock Island, Illinois. He is married to Ann Griffith, a UK national and has three children.
