Marai Chatterjee

Mirai Chatterjee is the Coordinator of Social Security at SEWA. She is responsible for SEWA’s Health Care, Child Care and Insurance programmes. Before this she was General Secretary of SEWA for three years and Coordinator of SEWA Health Team for twelve years. She is currently Chairperson of the SEWA - promoted health cooperative – Lok Swasthya.

Mirai has a B.A. from Harvard University in History and Science and a masters from Johns Hopkins University’s school of Hygiene and Public Health.
She has written several papers on organizing and empowerment of women workers, social protection of women and health care in India.

She is also on the Boards of several organizations in India including the Friends of Women’s World Banking (FWWB), Public Affairs Centre (PAC), Health Watch and the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI). She has been a member of several national task forces on social security, health and poverty reduction, including the National Labour Commission. She is currently advisor to the National Commission for the Unorganised Sector and the National Rural Health Mission. She is also a Commissioner in WHO’s new Commission on Social Determinants of Health.

Mirai Chatterjee is based at SEWA in Ahmedabad.
